The UBC Division of Cardiology is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Matthew Bennett as our UBC Department of Medicine new Planetary Health Lead, effective January 1, 2026, for a five-year term. This leadership role reflects the Division’s commitment to advancing planetary health initiatives and supporting climate-resilient cardiovascular care across education, research, and clinical practice.
Dr. Bennett is a Clinical Associate Professor and Cardiologist/Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
He completed an Honours degree in Mathematics at the University of Victoria, followed by medical school, Internal Medicine residency, and Cardiology fellowship at UBC. He then pursued advanced training in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Western Ontario.
Dr. Bennett has made substantial contributions across education, scholarship, and planetary health leadership:
- Undergraduate Medical Education: Arrhythmia Week Co-Lead
- Publications: Nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles, including 28 as first or senior author
- Books & Chapters: Author of seven book chapters and co-author of two books
- Planetary Health Leadership: Current Chair of the Planetary Health Committee for both the
- Vancouver Physician Staff Association
- Canadian Cardiovascular Society
